On the morning of August 31, 2016, after holding talks, Premier Li Keqiang and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada jointly met the press at the Great Hall of the People, and answered questions from journalists.

Li Keqiang introduced the outcomes of talks between him and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He expressed that the relationship between the two countries, which has achieved historical development since the establishment of diplomatic relations 46 years ago, has solid foundation and faces new development opportunities. With a long-term perspective, both sides have decided to set up an annual dialogue mechanism between Chinese Premier and Canadian Prime Minister, give full play to mechanisms including high-level dialogues on national security and rule of law and annual meetings between foreign ministers, and enhance political mutual trust in many aspects, so as to accelerate the development of bilateral relations.

Li Keqiang pointed out that the two economies are highly complementary with broad space for cooperation, especially in such areas as high-technology and agriculture. Both sides agreed to launch a feasibility study on a free trade agreement as early as possible, sending a clear message to the international community that both sides will advance trade and investment liberalization and facilitation. Endeavoring to deepen reform and expand opening up, China is willing to expand bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, and unleash the tremendous energy of China-Canada cooperation.

Li Keqiang stressed that common interests between both countries far outweigh their differences. China and Canada should firmly seize the general direction of the development of bilateral relations, seek common ground while reserving difference, and take a firm hold of the overall development of bilateral relations. It not only benefits the two countries, but also world peace and development.

Justin Trudeau expressed that the talks between both sides are rather productive. The new Canadian government is ready to adhere to mutual respect, further tap potential and expand cooperation areas on the basis of traditional Canada-China friendship, so as to build a closer partnership. Both sides agreed to establish the mechanism for the highest level of dialogue, expand the scale of trade and investment, broaden cooperation in such fields as agriculture, energy, clean energy and innovation, step up non-governmental communication, reinforce exchanges on tourism and culture, and strengthen communication and coordination on climate change, environmental protection and peacekeeping as well as other global issues, so as to benefit the people of the two countries and the world.
