Wang Yi Meets with Minister of Foreign Affairs María Fernanda Espinosa of Ecuador

On September 19, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Minister of Foreign Affairs María Fernanda Espinosa of Ecuador on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Wang Yi expressed that although both countries are far from each other, China has always developed relations with Ecuador from a strategic height and long-term perspective. At present, Ecuador is entering into a new stage of national construction. China is willing to actively conduct discussion, integrate the “Belt and Road” initiative with national development plan of Ecuador, and deepen cooperation in infrastructure, energy, mining, production capacity, post-disaster reconstruction and other areas with Ecuador, so as to make positive contributions to promoting economic and social development of Ecuador. China stands ready to continuously enhance coordination and cooperation with Ecuador in international affairs, so as to safeguard the common interests of developing countries.

María Fernanda Espinosa said that President Xi Jinping paid a historical state visit to Ecuador last year, and both sides established a comprehensive strategic partnership. Under guidance of this position, bilateral communication and cooperation in various fields have been developing rapidly. Ecuador thanks China for its sincere assistance to earthquake relief and post-disaster reconstruction in 2016, and is willing to further deepen cooperation with China. Paying high attention to China’s international status and role, Ecuador hopes to enhance coordination under multilateral frameworks including the UN, and the Group of 77 and China.

In regard to the recent incident that Chinese fishing boats are docked in the waters of Ecuador, Wang Yi reiterated that China firmly opposes illegal fishing in any forms, and urges Ecuador to solve the issue based on the objective facts and international law in a fair and just way to practically safeguard rightful and legitimate interests of detained sailors. María Fernanda Espinosa stated that Ecuador is willing to enhance communication with China and jointly find ways to properly solve the problem. The country would not allow the individual case to break general situation of the development of bilateral relations.
