Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith of Laos

On December 15, 2017, when attending the 3rd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith of Laos.

Wang Yi expressed that General Secretary and President Xi Jinping's historical visit to Laos last month was a complete success, writing a new chapter for China-Laos friendship. The top priority of both sides for the next stage is to firmly grasp the main line of implementing the outcomes of the visit, well plan practical cooperation in all fields and make positive efforts for the building of a community with a shared future with strategic significance for China and Laos. Both sides should focus on the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" and China-Laos Economic Corridor, decide the list of key cooperation projects as early as possible, accelerate the joint building of the China-Laos Economic Corridor Cooperation Mechanism, start formulating the construction planning of the corridor, and ensure smooth progress of the construction of the China-Laos Railway.

Saleumxay Kommasith expressed that General Secretary and President Xi Jinping paid a milestone visit to Laos. The Lao side will effectively implement the visit outcomes under the spirit being good comrades, partners and brothers. The Lao side thanks China for its long-term support to Laos in all fields, and is willing to further strengthen the strategic docking of the "Belt and Road" to boost the construction of Laos-China Railway and the economic corridor.

Wang Yi said that the Foreign Ministers' meeting combs through and summarizes the LMC progress has been made so far, and makes clear the direction for both sides in making efforts for the next stage, laying a sound foundation for the 2nd Leaders' Meeting to be held at the beginning of 2018. The Lao side will take over the presidency at a crucial stage as the LMC has evolved from its nurturing period into the growing period, and will shoulder great responsibilities. China stands ready to provide strong support for Laos and work together to lead the LMC to new highs according to the consensus reached by the leaders.

Saleumxay Kommasith expressed that the LMC has set an example for regional cooperation and achieved numerous important and visual outcomes within less than two years since its launch, bringing more and more benefits to all countries along the basin. The Lao side is very glad to be the co-chair in 2018, and stands ready to closely cooperate with all parties for more outcomes.
