Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang's Comment On China-Japan Relations
2006-09-18 00:00

Q: It is reported that Abe, the leading presidential hopeful for the presidency of Liberal Democratic Party, will visit China in October after taking office as new Prime Minister. Now the governments of both countries are making preparations for his visit. Please confirm.

A: China always attaches great importance to developing China-Japan friendly and cooperative relations. Now the China-Japan relations encounter some difficulties. Normal exchanges are obstructed between leaders of the two countries. The sticking point is Japanese leaders' obstinate homage to Yasukuni Shrine. Currently, the key lies in Japanese leaders' early decision to completely eliminate the political obstacle and put bilateral relations back on the track of normal development as early as possible. China's position is clear and firm.
