Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang's Remarks on the U.S Decision to Sell More Weapons to Taiwan
2007-03-02 00:00

Q: It is reported that the U.S Department of Defense recently declared to sell over 400 "advanced intermediate-range air-to-air missile" and "maverick air-to-ground missile", with a total value of 421 million dollars to Taiwan. What is China's comment?

A: China resolutely opposes the U.S weapon sale to Taiwan. Our position is consistent, clear and firm. The U.S weapon sales to Taiwan are a grave violation of the three Sino-U.S Joint Communiqués, especially the commitment made by the U.S government in the August 17 Joint Communiqués and a gross interference of China's domestic affairs. We express our strong dissatisfaction and resolute objection to the decision and have made solemn representation to the U.S.

The current situation across the Taiwan Strait is complicated and sensitive. We solemnly request the U.S strictly abide by the one China policy commitment repeatedly made by its leaders and government, comply with the Sino-U.S three Joint Communiqués and oppose the "Independence of Taiwan". The U.S should withdraw immediately its weapon sales to Taiwan, cut off militery connection with Taiwan and refrain from doing anything that encourages separatist forces advocating "Taiwan Independence", so as not to father undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and Sino-U.S relations.
