Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jiang Yu's Remarks on the 60th World Health Assembly's Rejection to Proposal Involving Taiwan
2007-05-15 00:00

The 60th World Health Assembly (WHA) convened on May 14, Beijing time. Instigated by the Taiwan authorities, a handful of countries proposed to include the discussion of Taiwan's application for WHO membership into the Assembly's agenda, only to meet with sheer rejection due to resolute opposition from the vast majority of WHO member states. The World Health Organization is a United Nations specialized agency whose membership requires sovereignty. Taiwan is clearly ineligible. The rejection of the proposal demonstrates again that the one-China principle is universally recognized by the international community, while the Taiwan authorities' political attempt to play over the health issue to seek its 'de jure independence' internationally will never succeed.
