Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Liu Jianchao's Remarks on Taiwan's Possible "Recognition" of Kosovo Independence
2008-02-18 00:00

Q: Kosovo unilaterally declared independence on February 17. It is reported that the Taiwan authorities congratulated Kosovo on that and might recognize the latter as an independent state. What's China's position? Will the independence of Kosovo constitute a precedent for the resolution of the Taiwan question?

A: It is known to all that as a part of China, Taiwan has no right or eligibility to give the so-called "recognition".

There is only one China in the world. The Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China and Taiwan is an inseparable part of the Chinese territory. This is universally recognized by the international community. We resolutely oppose the attempt of anyone or any group to separate Taiwan from China by any means. Any attempt of this kind will get nowhere.
