Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jiang Yu's Remarks on US Speaker Pelosi's Statement on the Beijing Olympics
2008-04-03 00:00

Q: According to reports, Pelosi Speaker, of the US House of Representatives issued a statement recently, claiming that she did not support boycotting the Beijing Olympics, but "the International Olympic Committee made a mistake in awarding the 2008 Summer Games to China." She also said that she supported "the rights of individuals and groups to make their views known about the actions of the Chinese government" when the torch passes through San Francisco next month. How do you comment on that?

A: We express grave concern and strong dissatisfaction over the relevant statement.

Awarding the 2008 Summer Olympics to China is a solemn decision of the International Olympic Committee, representing the common aspiration of the people worldwide including the US. Both the US and China look forward to a smooth torch relay in San Francisco which is also in the interest of both. We urge relevant US politicians to respect the spirit and principle of the Olympics, adopt a responsible attitude on the Olympics and torch relay and refrain from doing things going against the will of the people and disrupting the Olympics and the torch relay.
