Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Liu Jianchao's Remarks on US Congressman's Allegation that China Monitors Foreign Tourists
2008-08-01 00:00

Q: Recently the US Senator Brown Back claimed that the Chinese Government has installed monitoring devices in major foreign hotels in Beijing to monitor all hotel guests and collect information. How do you comment on this?

A: The US congressman's accusation is totally unfounded and ill-intended. No special security measures beyond universally adopted international practice are applied at public venues and hotels in China. In China, individual privacy is protected according to the law and there is no need for foreign tourists to worry about. We urge relevant US politicians to discard prejudice, stop slandering, and refrain from activities that sabotage the Beijing Olympic Games and undermine China-US relations.
