On the afternoon of August 20, 2008, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Qin Gang held a regular press conference and answered questions on President Hu Jintao's visit to the ROK, the situation in South Ossetia, and the Beijing Olympics.

Qin Gang: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Now, the floor is open.

Q: There was a bomb attack yesterday at a school near Alger, the capital city of Algeria, causing heavy casualties. Could you comment?

A: The Chinese government condemns this terrorist attack, expresses deep condolences to the victims, and sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and those injured. China firmly opposes terrorism in any form and firmly supports the efforts of the Algerian government to combat terrorism and safeguard national stability.

Q: What's your comment on the latest development of the conflict between Russia and Georgia?

A: Georgia and Russia have signed the cease-fire agreement and begun to withdraw their troops. China welcomes that. We hope this will help relevant parties resolve the conflict peacefully through dialogue and ultimately find a proper solution. At this point, the top priority is to maintain peace, stability and people's normal life in the region.

Q:Will the passing away of Zambian President affect China's policy towards Zambia and its investment there? What do you think of the future China-Zambia relations?

A: China laments the passing away of President Mwanawasa. We extend our condolences to his family and heart-felt sympathy to the Zambian Government and people. President Mwanawasa is an outstanding leader and statesman, who has made great contribution to Zambian political stability, economic growth, and regional peace and development. His commitment to the China-Zambia relations and dedication to the all-round cooperation between the two countries is unforgettable for the Chinese Government and people. China attaches great importance to its tradtional friendship with Zambia, and is ready to work with Zambia to further promote our friendship and cooperation.

Q:Could you brief us on President Hu Jintao's visit to the ROK? What's the topic of his talks with the ROK President Lee Myung Bak?

A: At the invitation of President Lee Myung Bak, President Hu Jintao will pay a state visit to the ROK, which is an important event in the history of China-ROK relations. During the visit, President Hu will talk with President Lee Myung Bak and meet with National Assembly Speaker Kim Hyung-O and Prime Minister Han Seung Soo to exchange views on China-ROK relations and international and regional issues of common interests. President Hu will also attend a series of bilateral exchange activities. We are willing to work with the ROK to identify the direction and goals for future exchanges and cooperation in a wide range of fields so as to further promote bilateral relations.
