Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Remarks on the Situation in Kenya
2008-03-03 00:00

On February 28, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and opposition party leader Raila Odinga signed the Agreement on the Principles of Partnership of the Coalition Government. China welcomes and congratulates the signing of the agreement, and commends the two sides in proceeding from the overall interests of the nation and the Kenyan people and solving the election disputes politically through dialogue and consultation. China hopes all parties concerned would cherish the hard-earned result, and continue to properly resolve other issues through dialogue, in a bid to safeguard national peace and stability in Kenya. China also applauds and supports the important role of the international community, including former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the African Union, in promoting a political settlement of the crisis in Kenya.

Kenya is China's traditional friend. China attaches great importance to developing friendly relations and cooperation with Kenya, and actively supports Kenya's efforts to achieve political reconciliation, economic development and social progress. China will work with Kenya for the continuous development of China-Kenya relations.
